KOB 4 report - 4/16/15 - by Eddie Garcia

Climatologists are saying this spring could turn out to be wetter than usual. Monsoon season starts soon after that, and it seems every year, someone gets caught in the floodwaters.

Now there is a new sign and slogan with a simple message for all New Mexicans: "Turn around, don't drown."

Volunteers from the New Mexico Floodplain Managers Association teamed up with our state's Department of Homeland Security to win a grant, which is paying for 100 of the signs.

They will soon go up in high-risk flood areas statewide in the hopes of keeping people and their property safe.

The risk to all of us comes when we misjudge water depth, especially while driving.

"Turn around, don't drown. It's not worth it. Just a couple inches can actually lift a car up and sweep it away," New Mexico Floodplain Managers Association Chair David Turk.

In some cases, a wall of water can come from seemingly nowhere.

"You can have a monsoon cell up in the mountains and then down where it's dry in the valley, you can have a flash flood," said Turk.

That sudden flooding can hit ditches, low lying areas, rivers , streams and arroyos.

Expect to see these signs going up almost everywhere in the coming years.

"Hopefully we can continue our partnership with the state and with the government and continue to put these signs up," said Turk.
